Renowned boxer Ricky Hatton was diagnosed with a degenerative brain disease before his passing. An autopsy conducted after his death on September 14, 2025, revealed signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in the former world boxing champion’s brain, likely resulting from repeated head injuries.
CTE, known to affect athletes like footballers, rugby players, and American football players, causes degenerative changes in the brain, even in younger individuals like Hatton, who was 46 at the time of his death. Experts confirmed that Hatton’s brain scans showed evidence of CTE associated with recurrent brain trauma, leading to symptoms such as memory loss and cognitive decline.
CTE is a progressive condition that damages nerve cells in the brain, ultimately leading to dementia. Diagnosis can only be made postmortem through brain autopsies. The cause of Hatton’s death was reported as “hanging” during the inquiry, ruling out any suspicious circumstances.
The NHS outlined early and advanced symptoms of CTE, including personality changes, mood swings, memory loss, and movement issues. These symptoms typically become noticeable about a decade after sustaining repeated head injuries, remaining stable for a while before worsening.
While CTE is linked to multiple head traumas rather than a single injury, individuals with a history of concussions or repeated head impacts are at higher risk. Apart from athletes in contact sports, military personnel with blast injuries or victims of prolonged physical abuse may also face an elevated risk of developing CTE.
Prevention of CTE involves avoiding repeated head injuries by using appropriate protective gear, like helmets, and ensuring proper treatment for head injuries. Although there is no cure for CTE, symptom management resembling dementia care is available, including speech therapy for memory loss and physiotherapy for mobility issues.
