“Family of Meningitis Victim Pushes for Increased Safeguards”

Date:

The family of a 20-year-old student who passed away from meningitis B while at university is advocating for increased measures to safeguard young individuals from this lethal infection. Sophie Ward, aged 20, tragically died after being misdiagnosed with the flu at a hospital emergency department and then sent home. Despite her mother’s insistence that Sophie’s symptoms resembled those of meningitis, she was discharged. Early the next morning, Sophie became severely ill with a high fever and vomiting, prompting a return to the hospital. Unfortunately, she succumbed to the infection around 12 hours later on July 31, 2023. Sophie’s father emphasized the need for government intervention, especially in light of a recent meningitis outbreak in Kent that claimed the lives of two other students.

In a separate incident, 18-year-old Juliette Kenny, a sixth form student, also fell victim to meningitis and passed away on March 14. Additionally, a 21-year-old student from the University of Kent lost their life during the same outbreak, which was associated with the Club Chemistry nightclub in Canterbury.

Sophie, an aspiring artist from London, tragically died within a day of displaying symptoms. Her condition deteriorated rapidly at home, prompting her mother to call emergency services. Despite the swift arrival of an ambulance, Sophie’s health continued to decline, with reports indicating blood oozing from her eyes upon admission to the hospital.

Nearly three years after Sophie’s passing, her father revealed that she had not received full protection against meningitis B, as she had only been vaccinated against other strains during her teenage years. While the menB vaccine was introduced for babies in 2015, many young adults born before this period remain vulnerable unless they have sought out private vaccination.

Expressing his concerns to the media, Mr. Ward urged greater awareness among young people and parents regarding the risks of meningitis B. He emphasized the need for proactive measures from the government to prevent further tragedies. Mr. Ward had previously appeared on ITV News to advocate for widespread administration of the menB vaccine, believing that such action could have saved Sophie’s life.

An inquest into Sophie’s death highlighted critical delays in her initial medical assessment at the hospital. Her mother described Sophie as a beloved and vibrant young woman, emphasizing the preventable nature of her tragic passing. She called for improvements in hospital diagnostic procedures to prevent similar losses in the future.
