Boxing legend Ricky Hatton found to have CTE in post-mortem exams

Date:

Boxing icon Ricky Hatton was discovered to have a degenerative brain condition before his passing. Post-mortem examinations revealed indications of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in the former world boxing champion Hatton, as revealed during the investigation into his demise.

Upon analyzing his brain, researchers identified “degenerative changes” commonly associated with older individuals and conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. Experts noted that the findings aligned with CTE resulting from repeated brain trauma, a common occurrence in boxers, albeit at a lesser severity level, leading to memory loss and cognitive issues.

Despite the brain damage, it was determined that it did not play a role in his death. The inquiry also indicated that there was no clear evidence suggesting that Hatton intended to end his life, despite the cause of death being recorded as hanging.

Senior coroner Alison Mutch stated that no written notes were discovered, and there was no proof indicating that the 46-year-old had planned suicide. She delivered a narrative verdict, stating that his intentions remained ambiguous.

His family mentioned that just before his passing, Hatton was in high spirits and optimistic about the future. They portrayed him as a dedicated father who was in a better place than he had been in years, despite past struggles with substance abuse.

On the evening of September 12 last year, Hatton dined with his daughters and granddaughter at a pub, appearing normal and expressing plans to travel to Dubai for a boxing exhibition match. However, he failed to attend an engagement the next day, leading to the discovery of his lifeless body at home.

Tests conducted post-mortem revealed that Hatton was significantly over the legal alcohol limit at the time of his demise. While there were traces of cocaine and cannabis in his system, they were not deemed contributory to his death.

Detective Sergeant Helen Grigalis indicated that Hatton had sent a message to a friend after returning home the previous evening. Subsequent attempts to reach him the following day went unanswered until his manager found him deceased at his residence.

Emergency responders confirmed his passing, noting no signs of foul play or suicidal intent at the scene. Statements from his son and the mother of his children highlighted Hatton’s positive approach to life and his affection for his family, shedding light on the impact of his loss on loved ones.
