A man in São Paulo, Brazil, underwent a complex jaw reconstruction procedure after falling on a metal bar while pursuing a thief who stole his phone. André Gayoso, 35, was returning home from a night out when a motorcyclist grabbed his phone while he was waiting for an Uber.
In his pursuit, André stumbled and hit a metal bar, causing serious injuries that left him in a coma for 13 days with a broken jaw and missing teeth. To repair his damaged chin, doctors used bone and skin from his right leg in 11 surgeries. Despite the ordeal, André’s sunglasses, his only unscathed possession, survived the incident.
Reflecting on the experience, André, a business owner, mentioned the challenges he faced upon waking from the coma, including the loss of muscle mass and significant weight. The theft also resulted in financial losses, with his accounts being drained, necessitating a month to recover his finances.
André recounted how the theft unfolded and his attempt to stop the thief with a broom handle, leading to the unfortunate accident. Fortunately, he was close to a hospital for immediate treatment. Despite accumulating substantial medical debt, his health insurance covered major surgeries, while he paid for smaller procedures himself.
Following 11 corrective surgeries, including a failed skin graft from his forearm, André underwent a lengthy procedure to replace a portion of his chin bone with bone from his leg. Additional surgeries were conducted to enhance his speech and facial aesthetics. Despite the challenges, André remains optimistic, focusing on the growth of his sunglasses brand, AAGYO, with plans to introduce new models.
As André continues his recovery journey, he looks forward to further cosmetic procedures, such as laser treatments and micropigmentation, to restore his appearance. Amidst the ongoing restoration process, he remains dedicated to expanding his sunglasses business and launching new products in the coming year.
