A dedicated father with a passion for fitness stumbled upon a diagnosis of renal cancer during a routine blood test as he prepared for a major athletic event.
David Ruttledge, hailing from Dublin, Ireland, was gearing up for a TRYKA relay earlier this year when he received the life-altering news. Following an ordinary test in October that showed abnormal kidney markers, his GP advised a retest, which also indicated elevated levels.
Subsequently, the doctor arranged an ultrasound to investigate further. During this time, David was actively participating in the fitness challenge with his wife, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law. Despite the shocking diagnosis, he has managed to raise substantial funds for the Irish Kidney Association and remains determined to continue his charitable efforts.
Reflecting on the experience, the 43-year-old expressed his initial disbelief upon learning about the mass on his left kidney after an ultrasound. Further scans confirmed the presence of renal cancer and a sizable tumor. Following numerous medical appointments, scans, and tests, David underwent a successful partial nephrectomy on March 3, during which surgeons were able to remove the tumor while preserving half of his kidney.
Grateful for the unwavering support from his family and friends throughout his journey, David emphasized the importance of early detection and the care provided by healthcare professionals. To mark his recovery, raise awareness, and give back, he is set to tackle another TRYKA challenge. He emphasized the significance of the event beyond fitness, aiming to inspire others facing similar battles and raise funds for a cause close to his heart.
Currently, David has gathered nearly €8,000 in donations, with contributions welcomed through a dedicated link. His story serves as a testament to resilience and the power of community support during challenging times.
