An elderly British man, Malcolm Timbrell, expressed his last encounter with his wife, friends, and neighbors whom he believes perished during the wildfires in Spain. The couple, Malcolm and Annette Kilgore, got separated from their group in Bedar village, Almeria province, as the fire engulfed their surroundings.
Having settled in Bedar after being featured on Channel 4’s “A Place in the Sun,” Malcolm and Annette aimed to flee in their car but had to backtrack to rescue their two cats. Upon returning, Malcolm found out that the group had abandoned their vehicles and opted to run ahead of the approaching fire, despite his warnings about the danger.
Regrettably, Malcolm managed to escape with one of the cats by maneuvering between abandoned cars before they were all consumed by the flames. Tragically, a 93-year-old British woman is among the confirmed 13 casualties of the devastating wildfires that ravaged southern Spain. The woman succumbed to severe burns after being admitted to the hospital with 20% body burns.
Reports surfaced that two British hikers survived but sustained severe burns amounting to 40% of their bodies. Discovered by a Civil Guard team, the pair was found just as night fell, indicating the critical timing of their rescue. Although in a serious condition, their lives are not in immediate danger.
Spanish authorities believe all victims were foreign tourists who attempted to escape on foot after abandoning their vehicles in the rugged terrain. Post-mortem examinations and DNA samples are being utilized to identify the deceased individuals.
Spain has faced heightened heatwaves in recent years, with temperatures often exceeding 40C. The British Foreign Office expressed condolences for those affected by the wildfires and assured support for impacted British nationals and their families, maintaining close collaboration with Spanish authorities.
