Two pilots have tragically lost their lives, and numerous individuals have sustained injuries following a devastating incident where an Air Canada aircraft collided with a fire engine on the runway of a major airport.
The plane, operated by Jazz Aviation on behalf of Air Canada, was carrying 72 passengers and four crew members. The flight had originated from Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Montreal.
The collision occurred around 11:40 pm, leading to the official closure of the airport. More than a dozen people are reported to have been injured in the incident.
Kathryn Garcia, the executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, confirmed that two Port Authority employees in the fire engine sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The fire engine was responding to a separate incident involving a United Airlines flight reporting an odor issue.
Additionally, a flight attendant was discovered outside the aircraft still buckled into her seat after the crash at LaGuardia Airport in New York. President Donald Trump expressed his condolences, labeling the collision a mistake due to the dangerous nature of the aviation industry.
An air traffic controller admitted fault for the collision, as revealed in audio recordings. Emergency response efforts were launched promptly, with 41 individuals, including passengers, crew, and rescue personnel, taken to the hospital for treatment. The airport area remains closed, causing significant travel disruptions.
Videos and images circulating on social media depict the severe damage to the aircraft and the chaotic aftermath of the incident. Rescue operations are ongoing at the scene, with reports indicating the airport closure will persist until Monday afternoon.
Efforts to enhance the safety and efficiency of airport operations are underway, emphasizing the importance of clear communication and coordination among all involved parties to prevent such tragic accidents in the future.
