A tragic incident unfolded as a crew member aboard a cruise ship passed away after falling overboard near Cancun. The Regal Princess embarked on a week-long voyage from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, setting sail on Saturday. The individual’s identity remains undisclosed, but reports indicate the disappearance occurred around 6am on Monday off the Mexican coast.
Following the distress call from the Princess Cruises-operated vessel, a search and rescue mission commenced. Initially reported as a crew member missing, the cruise line later confirmed the crew member’s unfortunate demise. Passengers en route to Cozumel were informed by the captain about the situation.
David Jimenez, a passenger onboard, recounted the ship’s immediate search efforts, aided by another cruise ship and Mexican maritime authorities. Despite over eight hours of intense search operations, the cruise line verified the crew member’s passing.
Passengers received hourly updates throughout the search operation, with counseling services made available for those impacted. Princess Cruises extended condolences to the crew member’s family and friends and offered grief support services to affected guests and crew members.
As the Regal Princess continued its journey, another passenger, Pam Holland Boyd, shared the news on Facebook, expressing condolences and mentioning the resumption of the trip with the next stop scheduled in Belize. Princess Cruises has been contacted for further comment.
