A tragic incident unfolded at a medical facility where a mother collapsed and passed away after enduring a prolonged wait for an appointment, as detailed in an inquest.
Jaqueline Watkins, aged 66, had been feeling unwell for several days at her residence and sought medical attention from her GP practice. Despite being scheduled for an appointment later in the week, she collapsed while seated in the waiting area of the clinic.
Efforts to revive Ms. Watkins by the medical team at Llanyravon Surgery near Cwmbran, South Wales were unsuccessful, leading to her unfortunate demise, according to the ongoing inquest at Gwent Coroners’ Court.
Reportedly, Ms. Watkins, a dog enthusiast residing in Llanyravon, had reached out to the surgery earlier in the week, but the earliest available appointment was set for 3 pm on Thursday, June 18. During her appointment, she collapsed in a chair while awaiting her turn, prompting her family to voice concerns about potential lapses in the care provided by the GP.
Following a post-mortem examination that did not provide a conclusive cause of death, Ms. Watkins’ family expressed their deep-seated uncertainties regarding the guidance and treatment received. The area coroner for Gwent, Rose Farmer, announced that a full inquest will convene in March next year to delve into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
In a heartfelt online tribute, Ms. Watkins was remembered as a “lovely lady.” Her daughter Donna shared, “Mum, a lifelong resident of Llanyravon, leaves behind her devoted partner of 26 years, Keith Berry, and a grieving family blindsided by this unexpected loss.”
The hearing was adjourned to facilitate further investigations into the matter.
