Teenagers aged 16 and 17 will now have restrictions on their social media usage to promote online safety. Liz Kendall announced that certain addictive design elements, such as infinite scrolling, autoplay videos, and recommender feeds, will be disabled during overnight hours from midnight to 6 am. While these restrictions will be automatically applied, teenagers can adjust settings if desired. The government believes these measures strike a balance between providing protections for older teens online while still allowing them some control over their settings.
Additionally, concerns about the abrupt transition for young individuals when the social media ban is lifted at age 16 have led to the implementation of these new measures. Keir Starmer and Ms. Kendall previously revealed the upcoming social media ban for under 16s starting in Spring 2027. Furthermore, Ms. Kendall announced that children under 18 will now be required to take breaks when using chatbots.
The government has also committed to collaborating with regulators to address platforms offering harmful mental health advice. This includes considering potential bans on chatbots posing significant risks to children. New guidelines on safe AI usage for children, parents, and guardians will soon be accessible on the Kids Online Safety Hub. Moreover, the UK plans to be the first nation to prohibit chatbots from providing sexual content to individuals under 18.
Over 300 teenagers and parents participated in a government pilot of these measures, with positive feedback on the effectiveness of overnight curfews in improving sleep and focus. However, some campaigners criticize the approach as fragmented, urging for a more comprehensive strategy. Andy Burrows, CEO of Molly Rose Foundation, emphasized the need for a more holistic plan to ensure children’s safety across various online platforms.
Ms. Kendall emphasized the importance of protecting young people from harmful online features while promoting healthy online experiences. She highlighted the significance of these measures in aiding teenagers in getting adequate sleep, focusing on education, and spending quality time with loved ones. The aim is to provide young individuals with the benefits of technology while equipping them with the tools to thrive in the online world.
