A British hiker who went missing earlier in the week has been discovered deceased in Spain.
The 61-year-old individual was reported missing on Thursday near the Canal de Moeño, located in Posada de Valdeón, a part of the Picos de Europa National Park.
Sources from the 112 Emergency Center of Castilla y León confirmed the discovery of the hiker in the Moeño canal. The Civil Guard will handle the body retrieval, as reported by Europa Press.
Following the hiker’s alert to authorities about feeling disoriented and fatigued while returning from a journey towards Caín, the Civil Protection and Emergency Agency of the Junta de Castilla y León initiated an extensive search operation to locate him, utilizing a rescue helicopter.
During the rescue coordination, a spokesperson from a regional government-run emergency response center mentioned, “We commenced a rescue operation at 7.11 pm on Thursday upon receiving a distress call from the Castilla and Leon province 999 ops center, reporting a 61-year-old British mountaineer had lost his way while on a mountain trail in the Picos de Europa.
“At that time, he was disoriented, facing adverse weather conditions with strong winds, low clouds, intermittent rain, and expressed extreme exhaustion.”
