British Individual on Tristan da Cunha Suspected of Hantavirus

Date:

Another British individual is now under suspicion for contracting the hantavirus in the wake of a distressing outbreak on a cruise ship.

The patient is currently situated on the secluded Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha, where the MV Hondius made a stop in mid-April, according to information from the UK Health Security Agency.

Two other British nationals have already been confirmed to have contracted the disease. One of them, a man, was evacuated from the ship on Wednesday and is presently in stable condition undergoing medical treatment in the Netherlands.

The second man, aged 69, is currently in intensive care after being airlifted to Johannesburg last month.

Out of the eight suspected hantavirus cases originating from the ship, five have been confirmed, including one of the three passengers who lost their lives.

The ship is anticipated to dock in Tenerife on Sunday, where UK government personnel will be present to assist British passengers disembarking, as mentioned by the UKHSA.

Individuals aboard the ship who are asymptomatic will be accompanied to an airport and provided with complimentary transport back to the UK.

Although no British citizens onboard are currently showing symptoms, they will be instructed to self-isolate upon their return home.

In a travel advisory, the UK Foreign Office cautioned British tourists about the emerging health threat of hantavirus in Argentina.

Investigations suggest that the Dutch couple who were the initial cases on the cruise ship, and subsequently passed away, might have contracted the lethal virus during a bird-watching excursion across Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay before embarking.

The voyage commenced from Argentina, with the investigation into the source of the outbreak centered in that region.
