A traditional British breakfast favorite is set to undergo a name change following a recent agreement with the European Union. Marmalade, a beloved spread found in many British households, may soon be rebranded as “citrus marmalade” in supermarkets and stores, pending the implementation of the new deal between the UK and the EU.
Previously, EU regulations stipulated that only preserves made with citrus fruits could be labeled as marmalade before Brexit. This led to the classification of preserves made from other fruits as jams or similar products in different EU languages, creating confusion in countries where words similar to marmalade were used for various spreads made from non-citrus fruits.
The stringent naming regulations for marmalade date back to lobbying efforts in the 1970s, which aimed to give the citrus spread a special status. The association of marmalade, especially the one made from oranges, with the UK was strengthened by cultural references like Paddington Bear and his fondness for marmalade sandwiches.
Following Brexit, Brussels has revised the rules surrounding marmalade, allowing all EU countries to sell spreads made from non-citrus fruits under the name marmalade starting in June. However, marmalades made from citrus fruits like oranges will now have to be marketed as “citrus marmalade” to comply with the updated regulations.
This adjustment will be effective in Northern Ireland this summer, aligning with a framework agreement that enables the region to maintain certain food laws aligned with the EU. The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) emphasized that British marmalade will remain unchanged and continue to meet international standards, ensuring its availability in the global market.
The agreement with the EU aims to streamline trade processes for UK exporters and provide flexibility in shaping industry regulations in the national interest. By removing unnecessary bureaucracy, the deal supports businesses and enhances the UK’s trading relationship with its largest partner.
