A British tourist lost his life after being attacked with a chair during a fight involving ten locals while vacationing in Cape Verde.
Dean Taylor, a 25-year-old man from south-east London, passed away on his way to a local hospital on January 7 following a confrontation in the popular tourist area of Santa Maria on Sal Island. Authorities have apprehended five men in connection with the death of the sales employee. Police stated that the victim was engaged in a dispute with a group of approximately ten individuals of Cape Verdean descent.
He suffered blows from a chair, as well as multiple punches and kicks while on the ground during the altercation. The attackers fled the scene immediately after, according to officials.
His father, Alexander Taylor, also from London, expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the family. The luxury brand manager said, “My wife and daughter are devastated. My brother-in-law in Cape Verde called me while I was at work on January 8 to inform me about Dean’s passing.
“It was a horrific experience. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, not even my worst enemy.”
The country’s Judicial Police reported that five men, aged between 19 and 35, were detained following Dean’s demise. A statement read, “In the early morning of January 7, around 03:00, a disagreement occurred between a group of local and international individuals on the pedestrian street of Santa Maria, near the Calema Pub, resulting in the death of a 25-year-old British citizen. The Foreign Office later confirmed Dean’s nationality as British.
“After thorough investigation and with the assistance of the National Police, five suspects were identified, ranging in age from 19 to 35 years. The individuals were taken into custody between January 7 and 8 by the Criminal Investigation Department on Sal Island.”
Alexander mentioned that Dean had traveled to Cape Verde with three school friends on December 28. He was scheduled to depart the day after the incident. “There’s a lot of buzz about Cape Verde currently,” Alexander noted. “They just wanted to have a good time there.
“His friends informed us that one of them was conversing with a woman. A drunk man acquainted with the woman intervened, and when my son and his friend saw him being mistreated, they stepped in to investigate and protect him. This led to the situation escalating. Passersby also became involved.”
The family disclosed that they had to pay 8,500 Euros to repatriate Dean as their travel insurance did not cover the expenses. They are yet to arrange his funeral as his body remains with a coroner. Alexander cautioned British vacationers planning to visit Cape Verde, advising them to “exercise caution while vacationing there and be vigilant.”
An official from the Foreign Office stated, “We are providing assistance to the family of a British individual who passed away in Cape Verde and are in communication with local authorities.”
