A UK minister has contradicted Donald Trump’s assertion that trading with China poses a risk, labeling the statement as “incorrect.”
Trade minister Sir Chris Bryant emphasized the importance of the UK engaging with China, dismissing Trump’s disapproval of Keir Starmer’s recent visit to China as “absolutely illogical.”
In response to the US president’s remarks, Sir Chris affirmed on BBC Breakfast that Trump’s viewpoint was flawed, pointing out Trump’s own friendly relationship with Chinese President Xi and his upcoming visit to China in April.
Speaking to Sky News, Sir Chris acknowledged the necessity of approaching China cautiously, acknowledging the need to address disagreements but highlighting China’s significant global influence as the world’s second-largest economy and the UK’s fourth-largest export market.
Mr. Trump criticized Keir Starmer’s efforts to enhance ties with China, deeming it “very risky,” particularly referencing Canada’s potential involvement with China and hinting at imposing 100% tariffs on Canada.
During Starmer’s visit, significant agreements were reached, including visa-free travel for UK citizens to China, tariff reductions on whisky benefiting the Scottish market, and plans for clearer rules on services for UK companies operating in China.
Furthermore, a new border security pact was announced to combat human trafficking, with joint UK-Chinese efforts aimed at disrupting criminal networks smuggling asylum seekers across the Channel.
Sir Chris stressed the necessity of acknowledging China’s pervasive role in daily life, emphasizing the importance of dealing with China while remaining vigilant, especially in areas like security to combat issues such as illegal drug trafficking and smuggling activities.
