Several British tourists fell ill and passed away from an unknown stomach bug while vacationing in a sunny destination. Among the victims were Elena Walsh, 64, from Birmingham, Mark Ashley, 55, from Bedfordshire, Karen Pooley, 64, from Gloucestershire, and a 56-year-old man. These four individuals died within a four-month period after visiting the Cape Verde islands off the coast of West Africa. They are part of a total of six deaths reported since 2023 following trips to the same location.
The legal representatives of the deceased tourists, Irwin Mitchell, shared details of the severe symptoms experienced by the victims as investigations into the fatalities are ongoing.
Emma, 55, the wife of Mark Ashley, expressed profound shock as her husband fell seriously ill during their vacation and never recovered. She recalled how their holiday turned into a nightmare when Mr. Ashley, a self-employed forklift truck driver, began experiencing stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and extreme fatigue just three days into their trip in October. Despite seeking medical attention upon their return to the UK, Mr. Ashley tragically passed away shortly after being hospitalized.
Similarly, Karen Pooley, a 64-year-old individual from Lydney, became unwell during her stay at a resort in Sal, suffering from gastric symptoms and later succumbing to complications from a fractured leg. Her husband, Andy, mourned her loss, describing her as a kind and loving person who brought joy to everyone around her.
Investigations revealed that the deaths of the tourists were attributed to various health complications, including multi-organ failure, sepsis, and cardio-respiratory arrest. The families of the deceased are now pursuing legal action against Tui, the travel operator responsible for arranging their trips.
Irwin Mitchell emphasized the urgent need for improved hygiene standards at the Cape Verde hotels to prevent further tragedies and ensure the safety of future holidaymakers. The law firm’s serious injury lawyer, Jatinder Paul, highlighted the severity of the situation, emphasizing the importance of addressing the reported hygiene issues promptly in collaboration with tourism authorities.
Efforts to obtain comments from Tui regarding the incidents are currently underway.
