“British Traveler in Thailand: Life Support Discontinued”

Date:

The mother of a British traveler who sustained severe injuries following an accident involving a truck in Thailand has revealed that she decided to discontinue life support for her son, as stated on the family’s GoFundMe page.

Ethan Lacey, aged 20, is currently in critical condition after falling from a moving pickup truck at a busy intersection in Pattaya, located approximately 90 miles from Bangkok, on May 16.

Kerry, 41, Ethan’s mother, recounted how witnesses observed the truck’s rear wheel running over him, with the wheel passing over his head.

Following medical assessments, including CT and contrast scans of Ethan’s body, his parents were informed that his condition was unlikely to improve, and his only chance of survival would result in him being bedridden. Doctors suggested that life support could be withdrawn based on their decision.

On May 27 at 1:45 pm, Ethan’s life support was removed, according to a GoFundMe campaign initiated by his grandmother, Anthea Chatwin. Ethan is now breathing independently and has been moved to a palliative care unit.

The GoFundMe page explained that after intense family deliberations, the difficult choice was made to cease active treatment and transition Ethan to palliative care due to the bleak prognosis of his quality of life and inability to breathe unaided. Despite signing the necessary paperwork for treatment withdrawal, Ethan has defied expectations by maintaining stable vital signs and breathing on his own.

In the aftermath of the incident, a friend in Thailand reported Ethan missing to the authorities, leading to Ethan’s father, Kevin, receiving a photo of him in an intensive care unit via Facebook Messenger.

Kerry and Kevin promptly flew to Thailand upon hearing the news and have been by Ethan’s side since the accident occurred.
