One of Spain’s prominent bullfighters suffered a severe injury when a bull’s horn pierced his rectum, causing a 10cm wound. José Antonio Morante Camacho, also known as Morante de la Puebla, was in a bullring in Seville facing a bull named ‘Clandestino’ during an event at the April Fair. The incident occurred as Morante attempted to control the bull, which charged at him, knocking him down and catching him in the buttocks with its horn.
Video footage captured the moment the bull’s horn made contact with Morante’s buttock, causing visible distress. He was later carried off the ring by fellow bullfighters. Prior to this incident, Morante had already suffered a minor injury to his ear during the event. Following a two-hour operation, a medical report revealed the extent of his injuries, describing a 10cm wound on the posterior anal margin, with damage to the anal sphincter muscles and a 1.5cm perforation in the rectum.
Specialized surgical procedures were carried out at the bullring’s infirmary to repair the rectal wall and sphincter apparatus. The unfortunate incident raised concerns about Morante’s well-being, overshadowing the remainder of the event. Prior to the event, Morante had made a significant move by cutting off his traditional bullfighter’s coleta, a decision that had generated much anticipation for his return to the ring.
Morante had planned a comeback at the April Fair and the Corpus Christi festival, attracting a crowd of 12,000 spectators for his eagerly awaited return.
