“Businessman’s In-Flight Rampage: Assault and Threats”

Date:

A 64-year-old married businessman created a disturbance on a British Airways flight from the Bahamas to London Heathrow, where he attempted to kiss a flight attendant and issued threats to cabin crew members. Philip Gould, who had been indulging in vodka and wine, was returning from a vacation in Grand Cayman with his wife when he became aggressive after being denied more alcohol onboard. He made inappropriate comments to a male flight attendant and engaged in verbal abuse towards cabin crew and his spouse.

Gould’s behavior escalated as he swore at the cabin crew, lunged towards the cockpit door, and verbally confronted the captain. Admitting to charges of sexual assault, acting in a manner likely to endanger an aircraft, and being intoxicated on an aircraft, Gould faces the possibility of a prison sentence as Judge Fiona Barrie warned him of the serious consequences of his actions.

During the flight, Gould’s disruptive actions led to safety concerns, prompting cabin crew to intervene and physically block him from accessing the cockpit. Despite attempts to calm him down, Gould continued to threaten violence towards the crew and passengers, even physically assaulting his wife.

In a bizarre turn of events, Gould made inappropriate advances towards a female air hostess and a male flight attendant, further alarming those onboard. His erratic conduct was deemed a significant safety risk by the prosecution, and he was eventually arrested upon landing at Heathrow.

Gould attributed his behavior to a mix of alcohol and emotional distress, claiming he was not intoxicated when boarding the aircraft. Despite his defense citing his struggles with PTSD and expressing remorse on his behalf, Gould pleaded guilty to various charges including assault, sexual assault, and reckless behavior endangering the aircraft.

The court granted Gould unconditional bail pending sentencing scheduled for February 11, where he is expected to face the consequences of his disruptive actions on the flight.
