“Canadian Bison Jerky Selected for NASA Space Mission”

Date:

Shianna Smart, co-owner of Trails End Buffalo Stix in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan, initially doubted the legitimacy of an email from NASA. However, after confirming its authenticity and engaging in discussions, she was thrilled by the opportunity. Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk chose the brand’s bison jerky for the upcoming NASA-SpaceX mission to the International Space Station, scheduled for October 1 pending final approval.

In a recent interview with Radio Canada, Smart expressed her excitement, especially since Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield had previously enjoyed their bison jerky sticks in space back in 2013. She never expected another request for their product to be sent to space.

Smart hopes that the bison jerky’s journey to space will highlight its suitability for various occasions, such as school lunches, sports activities, and travel. The product underwent a rigorous selection process by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and NASA before being approved for space travel.

Natalie Hirsch from the Canadian Space Agency mentioned that while NASA supplies most of the food for astronauts, they can customize some options. Canadian choices are provided by the CSA, catering to the astronauts’ preferences for their missions.

Among the requirements for space food are an 18-month shelf life, space-friendly packaging, and the absence of crumbs. Local support is crucial for small businesses like Trails End Buffalo Stix, as highlighted by Nolan Langer, the assistant plant manager at the Saskatchewan Food Industry Development Centre. The facility has been producing jerky for nearly two decades and plays a vital role in supporting local businesses.

Notably, Canadian products sent to space include items like maple syrup from Ontario and Quebec, as well as salmon from the west coast. The inclusion of these products showcases Canada’s diverse offerings in space missions.
