The parents of a Canadian teenager who was tragically found deceased on K’gari, an Australian island, surrounded by dingoes, have expressed their devastation over the loss of their daughter. Piper James, who was 18 at the time, had informed her father in Canada before embarking on her backpacking journey across the world, stating defiantly, “I’m 18, and you can’t stop me!”
The young woman, now 19, was discovered lifeless on Monday after being last seen heading for an early morning swim at the beach. Two passersby noticed a group of dingoes near her body on the white sands of 75 Mile Beach, a heritage-listed area on the tropical island in Queensland, Australia.
Thousands of miles away from her family, Piper met a tragic end, leaving authorities puzzled about the circumstances of her death. A post-mortem examination commenced on January 21 to investigate the cause, including the possibility of drowning in the strong ocean currents prevalent around K’gari, where wind speeds had peaked at 25 knots on the day of the incident.
Speculation also surrounds the potential involvement of the dingoes, as these wild animals have a history of dangerous encounters with humans on the island. Meanwhile, Piper’s parents, overwhelmed with grief, await the post-mortem results from across the Pacific Ocean.
