Canadian Woman Develops Russian Accent After Stroke; Seeks Return to Original Voice

Date:

After waking up from a small surgical procedure, a woman found herself speaking with a Russian accent, causing confusion and distress. Tara Livingston, a 56-year-old from Canada, developed the accent following a stroke in November 2023, which also resulted in speech difficulties. Despite undergoing intensive therapy to regain her speech abilities, the accent change persisted.

Tara was diagnosed with Foreign Accent Syndrome, a rare neurological condition that alters speech patterns, making individuals sound as if they have a foreign accent. She expressed frustration at strangers who doubted the authenticity of her accent, often mistaking it for a joke. One encounter even led to a heated confrontation with a Russian woman who accused Tara of pretending to be Russian.

Due to the challenges posed by her altered speech, Tara is undergoing ongoing speech therapy with the hope of restoring her original Canadian accent. She shared her emotional struggle of feeling like she has lost her identity and expressed a strong desire to regain her former self. Tara emphasized the importance of her accent in defining her sense of self and expressed a preference for returning to her Canadian accent or even adopting an Irish accent if given the choice.

The journey to reclaim her original accent has become a central focus for Tara as she navigates the complexities of living with Foreign Accent Syndrome and strives to regain a sense of normalcy in her life.
