A prominent figure in the cancer awareness community, Letícia Siqueira Oliveira, has sadly passed away at the age of 31 after initially downplaying her own symptoms.
Letícia, known as Lê among her peers, was in good health before her diagnosis. She bravely shared her battle against the disease on social media platforms.
Her passing was announced on March 17 by a close friend through a heartfelt video message to her numerous followers. The friend, visibly emotional, recalled Letícia’s request to create the video in case of such an outcome, expressing disbelief that the day had arrived.
At 28, Letícia experienced unusual symptoms such as sudden urges to use the restroom, which she initially attributed to minor issues like food sensitivities or stress. Despite her busy life, which included pursuing a master’s degree, home renovations, property purchase, and wedding planning, she ignored these warning signs for months, attempting to self-manage with probiotics, medications, and dietary adjustments.
As a healthy and active individual without prior health concerns, Letícia, a physiotherapist from Santo Antônio da Platina, Brazil, did not suspect a serious condition until she developed more severe symptoms like abdominal swelling, pain, and blood in her stool. Only then did she consider the possibility of an intestinal problem.
Reluctant to seek medical help initially, Letícia eventually consulted doctors, who discovered an advanced-stage tumor in her bowel, with additional growths in her ovaries and peritoneum. She underwent extensive surgery, including the removal of parts of her bowel, reproductive organs, and lymph nodes, followed by chemotherapy and the use of a colostomy bag during her recovery.
In a poignant post last year, Letícia reflected on her journey, acknowledging the challenges and lessons learned from living with a stoma. Despite facing palliative care at the age of 30 and marrying her partner, she remained positive about life, embracing every opportunity for joy and connection. A close friend praised her unwavering strength and determination, highlighting Letícia’s resilience until the very end.
