Céline Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris with new insights into her health struggles and treatment. The renowned Canadian singer shared in an exclusive Harper’s Bazaar feature that she had been experiencing symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years before officially being diagnosed with the rare neurological autoimmune disorder in 2022.
The pain intensified in 2020, making it difficult for Dion to walk on certain days, sometimes requiring a high dose of Valium for relief. Stiff person syndrome is a progressive condition that worsens over time, affecting a small fraction of the population. Its symptoms include muscle stiffness and painful spasms triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. While there is no approved treatment specifically for the disorder, various therapies can assist in managing the symptoms.
Prior to her diagnosis, Dion would attribute show cancellations to reasons like a cough or sinus infection, concealing the true extent of her discomfort. She expressed feeling a sense of dishonesty towards her fans, acknowledging their unwavering support that enabled her to seek extensive treatment.
After the diagnosis, Dion canceled all remaining performances and has not appeared on stage since the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, she is preparing to make a comeback in September. Dion’s recovery routine involves a rigorous regimen comprising medication, physical therapy, vocal training, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she engages in 90-minute Pilates sessions three times weekly and ballet classes twice weekly to prepare for her upcoming shows.
Described as constantly in motion by Harper’s reporter Jazmine Hughes, Dion is determined to return to the stage, considering her recovery and the opportunity to perform again as a miraculous gift. She emphasized the importance of appreciating what one has and expressed readiness, excitement, and slight nervousness for her comeback. Dion’s Paris residency, featuring 26 concerts from September 12 to May 29 next year, marks her highly anticipated return to the spotlight.
