The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a recall of certain Whole Foods Market brand items due to their connection to a salmonella outbreak in the United States. The affected products, including guacamoles, pico de gallos, salsas, and prepared foods, were distributed in Ontario stores and online. While no illnesses have been reported in Canada, individuals who suspect they may have fallen ill after consuming the recalled products are advised to contact their healthcare provider.
The recall is linked to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) investigation into salmonella cases associated with jalapeños from Sinaloa, Mexico, supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors. In the U.S., over 300 cases of illness have been reported, with 36 hospitalizations but no fatalities. The Public Health Agency of Canada indicated that it is not currently investigating any salmonella-related illnesses connected to the U.S. outbreak.
According to CFIA, salmonella is a harmful bacterium that causes salmonellosis, an intestinal infection. The bacteria are usually transmitted through the ingestion of contaminated food or water containing salmonella. CFIA warns that even if food looks and smells normal, it may still be tainted with salmonella and lead to sickness. Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. While most people recover within a week, severe cases can be life-threatening, especially for children, pregnant women, seniors, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically appear within six hours to six days of exposure and can persist for four to seven days.
