Double child murderer Ian Huntley was attacked in prison, suffering severe injuries. The incident occurred while he was occupied in a workshop at HMP Frankland in County Durham. Huntley, 52, was reportedly struck multiple times with a metal pole while bent over tying up string on a recycling crate. He was left in critical condition and placed in an induced coma following the assault.
Huntley sustained a broken jaw, brain trauma, and skull injuries in the brutal attack. He is currently on a ventilator in the hospital. The alleged perpetrator, identified as triple killer Anthony Russell, has not been officially confirmed by the authorities. Witnesses described the assault as extremely violent, with Huntley being struck around 15 times.
Despite the severity of the attack, no fellow inmates intervened to help Huntley. Staff eventually intervened, but not before significant harm was inflicted. Russell, the suspected attacker, reportedly expressed pride in the assault but also disappointment that Huntley survived.
Law enforcement indicated that Huntley’s condition remains serious as he receives treatment in the hospital. Huntley, serving a life sentence for the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002, has a history of evading suspicion by blending in with media attention during the investigation.
The attacker is expected to be segregated from other prisoners for an extended period due to the severity of the assault. Durham Constabulary confirmed that Huntley is still under medical care. The incident has caused a stir in the prison environment, leading to increased security measures to ensure the safety of inmates and staff.
