The President had previously stated that the United States would welcome all nations to the tournament, including Italy, despite the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Recently, an envoy representing Trump urged FIFA to consider substituting Iran with Italy in the World Cup. Italy failed to qualify for the event after losing in a penalty shootout against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Paolo Zampoli, speaking on behalf of Italy, expressed the desire to see the Azzurri participate in a tournament hosted in the United States due to their rich history and reputation in the sport.
When confronted with the possibility of Italy replacing Iran, Trump appeared surprised and requested time to contemplate the matter. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed that Iran would be welcomed at the tournament, emphasizing that the issue lies not with the athletes but with certain individuals associated with the IRGC.
Despite the speculations, FIFA has confirmed that there are no plans to replace Iran with Italy at the World Cup. Gianni Infantino, the FIFA president, reiterated that Iran’s participation is crucial and assured that the team will compete in the tournament. Meanwhile, Italy has rejected the idea of taking Iran’s place, citing the importance of earning qualification on the field.
In a different context, the Italian Olympic Committee president expressed offense at the notion of Italy replacing Iran at the World Cup, emphasizing the importance of deserving qualification. Italy’s Finance Minister also criticized the proposal as “shameful.”
