China Unveils Futuristic Airborne Aircraft Carrier Plan

Date:

China has announced plans to construct a massive airborne aircraft carrier as part of an ambitious air and space defense system called Nantianmen, or ‘Heavenly Gate’. This futuristic concept will feature the Luanniao, a colossal aerial vessel measuring 242 meters long, with a wingspan of 684 meters and weighing approximately 120,000 tons. Despite its sci-fi appearance, the Luanniao is intended to serve practical military purposes.

The proposed Luanniao would surpass conventional warships in size and supertankers in weight. According to Beijing, the carrier will be equipped to launch unmanned space fighters named Xuannu from its deck, while its hypersonic missiles could target objects in both the atmosphere and space.

China’s state broadcaster CCTV recently showcased computer-generated images depicting the Luanniao in action, including scenes of the aircraft releasing space jets and launching missiles. However, experts suggest that this concept is currently beyond existing technological capabilities. Instead, it is viewed as a strategic signal to deter potential adversaries.

Analogous to the US ‘Star Wars’ program that unsettled the Soviets in the 1980s, China’s proposal is seen as a bold move to assert its military prowess. While the feasibility of such a project remains questionable, China’s investments in space-related military technologies, such as anti-satellite systems, laser research, and hypersonics, are evident.

Notably, China recently conducted successful tests on a ‘phantom space strike’ technology designed to deceive enemy missile defense systems by emitting false target signals from space during a nuclear attack. This innovative approach involves spacecraft emitting radio interference to mislead adversaries into deploying interception equipment in the wrong direction.

Despite possessing fewer nuclear weapons compared to the US and Russia, China is actively exploring alternative technologies to enhance its military capabilities. The country’s focus on developing cutting-edge methods to counter missile defense systems underscores its commitment to advancing space-related military technologies.
