Club Chemistry Outbreak: Meningitis Scare Hits Kent

Date:

A University of Kent student named Alex Razas, 19, found himself hospitalized for four days due to meningitis following a kiss he shared with a girl at Club Chemistry nightclub. The incident occurred after his bartending shift on Friday, March 13. Within 48 hours, he experienced severe throat pain, prompting his friends to rush him to the hospital where he received intensive antibiotic treatment.

Alex’s mother anxiously watched as he battled the infection, with a moment of concern when he had difficulty waking up in the hospital. Fortunately, after four days of treatment, he was discharged and declared free of the illness. Recounting his ordeal, Alex described progressively worsening symptoms including high fever, muscle weakness, back pain, and neck stiffness.

Authorities have linked the meningitis outbreak to individuals who visited Club Chemistry in Canterbury on March 5, 6, or 7. Those who frequented the club during that period or had close contact with infected individuals are advised to seek preventive antibiotics to curb potential infections, with up to a 90% success rate in preventing the disease.

The number of meningitis cases associated with the nightclub has risen to 27, including two fatalities. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has expanded the eligibility for antibiotics and the MenB vaccine to contain the outbreak. They stress the importance of seeking immediate medical attention at the first sign of symptoms to receive prompt treatment and prevent further spread of the disease.

Club Chemistry, known as the biggest nightclub in Kent, has been a staple of Canterbury’s nightlife for over three decades. Despite its longstanding reputation for vibrant nightlife, recent events have cast a shadow over its celebratory atmosphere. Club management has temporarily closed the venue to prioritize the safety of patrons and staff, redirecting inquiries about canceled events for refunds through the ticketing company.

The UKHSA underscores the effectiveness of antibiotics in preventing meningitis and urges swift medical intervention upon symptom onset. The agency emphasizes daily updates on the evolving situation to effectively manage the outbreak.
