A dispute has erupted in the picturesque coastal town of Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk over an abandoned property that locals claim is negatively affecting the area. Residents are upset about the unsightly debris, bricks, and a chain fence left behind from an incomplete extension project, which they believe has turned into a construction materials dumping ground.
Following complaints to town officials, the matter has been escalated to the North Norfolk District Council for potential enforcement action. However, no action has been confirmed yet. Some locals have expressed their disappointment with the situation, with one resident criticizing the property’s unattractive appearance and vacant status amid a housing shortage in the area.
The property owner received approval in January 2021 to construct a two-story extension on a previously three-bedroom semi-detached house. Despite starting the renovation work, progress stalled last summer, leaving a messy front garden with rubble and building materials scattered around. While some neighbors are unbothered by the situation and believe the owner will complete the project eventually, others find the current state of the property unacceptable.
Reportedly, the house was sold for £298,000 in June 2020, but attempts to reach the owner for comments on the property’s future plans have been unsuccessful. Wells, once known for fishing, malting, and shipbuilding, has now gained a reputation as a second home destination and a culinary hotspot, earning accolades for its food and drink scene. The town was awarded a perfect five-star rating by Which? in the latest rankings, making it the top-rated town in Norfolk.
