Emergency responders from the Coastguard and RNLI swiftly reacted to a serious incident involving a vehicle in the sea during intense winds along the Devon coast last night.
RNLI Torbay and Brixham Coastguard Rescue were urgently dispatched to Torbay just before 9:20 pm on Friday as strong gusts reaching 60-75mph created waves up to four meters high.
RNLI Torbay received an immediate launch request from Solent Coastguard station, indicating a critical life-threatening situation.
Initial reports indicated that a car was washed into the sea at Corbyn Head in Torquay with occupants in the water, one potentially in distress.
Dramatic footage released by the RNLI showed their All-Weather Lifeboat battling massive waves as crews searched for the submerged vehicle.
In a Facebook post, RNLI Torbay described the challenging conditions faced by the crew during the mission, with high winds and large swells.
The All-weather Lifeboat was deployed following reports of a vehicle in the sea at Corbyn Head, Torquay with occupants in the water.
Upon arrival at the scene, it was revealed that the car was on the road near Torre Meadow, empty but surrounded by water.
The Coastguard initiated a search for the driver and passengers, while the ALB stood by in rough seas.
The driver was located, confirming no other occupants were present, leading to the mission’s conclusion by 10:00 pm.
Separately, Brixham Coastguard Rescue Team responded to reports of a car in distress in Torquay, finding the vehicle on a flooded road with the driver safe inland.
In Teignmouth, a pier section was torn away by the storm and carried a mile down to Dawlish.
