The severe weather conditions have resulted in seven fatalities in the Ub municipality of Minas Gerais, where the funeral parlor was flooded. Intense storms have lashed the region throughout the week.
Across the state of Minas Gerais, at least 46 individuals have lost their lives, with numerous others unaccounted for. All the deceased are residents of Juiz de Fora, situated north of Rio de Janeiro. The flash floods have caused devastation by destroying residences and businesses, sweeping away vehicles, flooding medical facilities, and leaving a path of ruin. Authorities have declared a state of emergency, shutting down local schools and daycare centers. The Minas Gerais fire department reports that over 3,000 residents have been evacuated from their homes.
Among the casualties was 11-year-old Bernardo Lopes Dutra, who tragically perished when his home collapsed due to the rain. “It’s an unexpected tragedy,” expressed his father, Ricardo Dutra, during the funeral in Juiz de Fora, describing Bernardo as “a compassionate boy who touched the lives of those around him in his unique way.” Dutra’s wife and daughter remain hospitalized.
Reverend Ananias Simões, the pastor at the church frequented by the Dutra family in Juiz de Fora, disclosed that the church now serves as a temporary shelter. “We are providing aid by gathering essential supplies such as food and water. It feels like a war zone,” mentioned Rev. Simões.
