Community Rallies for Family of Man Killed in Shark Attack

Date:

The family of a man who tragically lost his life in a great white shark attack has fondly remembered him as a unique and caring individual. Steven “Mattas” Mattaboni, aged 38, was attacked by the massive 16-foot shark near a popular Australian holiday spot. The incident occurred on Rottnest Island, close to Perth, Western Australia.

Following the devastating loss, Steven’s wife, Shirene, described him as a loving husband and devoted father to their two young daughters. She expressed deep sorrow over his passing, emphasizing his passion for fishing and the ocean. Describing him as loyal and generous, Shirene highlighted his selfless nature.

Friends and loved ones of the family have initiated a GoFundMe campaign to provide support to Shirene and her daughters. The fundraiser has already raised over £86,000 by May 18, showcasing the community’s outpouring of support for the grieving family.

Steven, who was also a talented football player, was well-regarded by his club in Kingsley, Perth. His club members praised him as a genuine and kind-hearted person who brightened every room he entered. They expressed their condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.

Sergeant Michael Wear, leading the investigation on Rottnest Island, acknowledged the bravery of Steven’s friends who tried to save him during the tragic incident. The WA Police Minister, Reece Whitby, also commended their efforts and extended sympathies to Steven’s loved ones.

The unfortunate attack coincided with several reported great white shark sightings in the area, according to the WA government’s SharkSmart website. The incident has sparked an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Steven’s death.

Rottnest Island, a popular tourist destination in Western Australia, witnessed its first fatal shark attack since March last year. With approximately 1,300 documented shark attacks in Australia since 1791, Steven’s death serves as a solemn reminder of the risks associated with ocean activities in the region.

For those willing to contribute to the Mattaboni family’s fundraiser, a donation link is available. The community continues to mourn the loss of a beloved husband, father, and friend, honoring his memory and legacy.
