A 13-year-old teenager passed away after consuming contaminated cheese that led to his vegetative state nine years ago. Mattia Maestri, from Italy, ingested raw-milk cheese tainted with E.coli bacteria in June 2017 in the northern region of the country.
The boy’s family has been engaged in a legal battle against the individuals responsible, including both the cheese factory and healthcare professionals involved in his treatment. His father, Giovanni Battista Maestri, announced the sad news of his son’s demise, expressing gratitude for the support during this difficult time.
Mattia, only four years old at the time, ate a piece of ‘Due Laghi’ cheese manufactured with raw milk from the Coredo cheese dairy in the Non Valley in Trentino. The father alleges that errors in the milk collection process led to the contamination.
Subsequently, the child developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a severe condition associated with the breakdown of red blood cells, often linked to E.coli. This syndrome can result in blood clot formation and hinder blood flow to critical organs, such as the brain.
Mattia entered an irreversible vegetative state, experiencing numerous challenges including daily epileptic seizures, vision loss, and the need to take 47 medications daily. Two individuals from the dairy were found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm after a lengthy legal process.
Following his son’s illness, Giovanni established a consumer group and authored a book to warn parents about the risks of consuming unpasteurized dairy products. The book was presented to the Italian parliament to raise awareness and prevent similar tragedies.
The family’s legal representatives have filed a grievance alleging aggravated negligent homicide, highlighting the nine years of suffering endured by Mattia and his parents. Reflecting on his son’s condition, Giovanni recounted the challenges faced during his care journey.
Mattia’s funeral took place in Coredo, where many mourners gathered to honor the young boy. Father Raymond Marcieca described Mattia’s life as a profound trial, emphasizing his innocence and eternal presence as an angel.
