Lifeguards cleared a British beach when a large shark was seen swimming in the waters. RNLI lifeguards used loudspeakers to alert beachgoers to leave the water at St Ouen’s Bay, Jersey, following multiple sightings of the dark grey shark measuring approximately 10 to 12 feet long.
A local lifeguard mentioned that it was the first instance in Jersey’s history of closing the beach due to a shark sighting, a rare occurrence in the British Isles. Lifeguard Tom Rolls expressed astonishment upon receiving reports from a colleague about the shark sightings along the coast.
After red flags were raised and announcements made via PA system, the beach reopened about an hour later with no reported injuries. Notably, a similar incident occurred in June when a 4.3-meter-long shark washed up on Grève d’Azette beach in Jersey and tragically passed away despite rescue efforts.
Sand tiger sharks are typically found in tropical and subtropical waters like the Mediterranean. In a separate incident in August 2021, RNLI lifeguards temporarily cleared a section of water off Boscombe and Bournemouth beaches in Dorset due to reports of a large marine animal, likely a harmless basking shark. Similarly, in July 2012, surfers and swimmers were evacuated from Croyde Bay in Devon after a sighting of a large fin believed to be from a basking shark within a safe swimming zone.
