Since its introduction in October 2025, the European Union’s Entry-Exit System (EES) has sparked controversy for its impact on travelers. The system aims to simplify the process for Brits entering and exiting the EU, but issues such as long airport queues and confusion have arisen during its implementation.
Although the EES is not set to be fully operational until April 10, inconsistencies among EU countries regarding its usage have already led to challenges for holidaymakers, particularly due to a specific EU regulation causing confusion.
George Cremer, a digital nomad and software developer, has developed an app called Schengen Simple to assist British and other non-EU nationals in navigating the 90/180-day rule. This rule restricts visa-free travel within the Schengen Area to a maximum of 90 days within a rolling 180-day period.
According to George, common mistakes that catch people out include misunderstanding the rolling window nature of the 90/180-day rule. Unlike a visa stamp system, where days reset upon leaving, the Schengen rule continuously tracks the previous 180 days, affecting the allowance for future travel plans.
Additionally, some individuals erroneously believe that each Schengen country operates a separate 90-day limit. In reality, all 29 countries share a collective pool of 90 days, counting stays across various countries together.
George advises travelers to plan ahead, especially with busy travel seasons like Easter and summer approaching. By considering future trips in advance, individuals can avoid exceeding their allocated days and facing unexpected restrictions.
