Court denies ex-teacher’s bid to reduce sex assault sentence

Date:

A former teacher’s attempt to reduce his prison sentence for sexually assaulting a vulnerable pupil was denied by the Court of Appeal. The teacher, an army veteran named Simon Taylor, was convicted of multiple offenses against a teenage girl and sentenced to four years and six months in jail at Norwich Crown Court. The crimes occurred over a span of more than two years, starting when the victim was a student at Hethersett Academy in Norfolk, where Taylor was employed as a teacher.

Following the victim’s report, Taylor confessed to two counts of sexual assault, one occurring in his car, along with sexual activity with a child in a position of trust and two counts of sexual communication with a child. During the appeal, Taylor’s attorneys argued that the sentence was excessive and that the judge did not adequately consider mitigating factors, such as Taylor’s post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) resulting from a leg amputation after a roadside bomb incident in Afghanistan.

However, the appeal was dismissed by three senior judges who emphasized the victim’s vulnerability and Taylor’s persistent misconduct despite warnings. The judges stated that the victim had been manipulated and groomed by Taylor, leading to a significant increase in the sentence due to the severity of the offenses. They highlighted Taylor’s misuse of the school’s messaging platform to contact the girl and efforts to delete messages as attempts to conceal evidence.

Taylor, observing the proceedings from HMP Littlehey in Cambridgeshire, showed no reaction as his appeal was turned down. In addition to his prison term, Taylor was ordered to register as a sex offender, subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, a restraining order, and prohibited from working with children.
