A former Conservative member, Andrew Rosindell, lost his legal battle against his old party after they changed the locks to his office when he switched to the Reform party. Rejecting his case, the court deemed it weak and ordered him to pay £23,000 in costs.
Rosindell, who criticized the Conservatives upon joining Nigel Farage’s party, wanted unrestricted access to Margaret Thatcher House in his Romford constituency. However, the High Court dismissed his claim, stating that he forfeited his right to the office upon defecting.
Having utilized the office for over two decades since his election in 2001, Rosindell transitioned to Reform in January, citing dissatisfaction with his former party’s responsiveness to his constituents’ concerns.
The Romford Conservative Association contended that Rosindell’s usage rights were tied to his Conservative affiliation and accused him of potential espionage during the upcoming local elections. Despite Rosindell’s payment for exclusive office use, the association argued the agreement was void and changed the locks without warning.
Legal representatives for both sides clashed over the interpretation of the agreement, with the association asserting that Rosindell’s departure from the Conservative Party automatically nullified his usage rights. They emphasized the office’s importance for the Conservative campaign and the potential harm of allowing a rival party member unrestricted entry.
The association highlighted Rosindell’s failure to secure alternative office space and suggested that Reform should provide support in this matter.
