An attack that resulted in eight casualties in Ukraine has triggered massive fires in Russia in a significant cross-border conflict. The clashes coincided with President Donald Trump’s crucial visit to Beijing and an uncertain ceasefire in Iran.
During the night, Russian drones launched strikes in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, targeting residential areas, infrastructure, and industries with 139 attack drones. Reports from Ukraine’s Air Force indicated that Russia deployed various drones, including Shahed drones and decoys, in the overnight assault.
The Kremlin’s strikes originated from different locations within Russia and occupied Crimea, with a subsequent massive follow-up attack using around 200 drones. The capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, was reportedly a target of a drone wave in the morning, leading to explosions heard in the south of the city.
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine warned of potential drone attacks throughout the day as Russia intensified its daytime assaults, deliberately targeting railway infrastructure and civilian areas. In response, Ukraine retaliated by attacking Russia’s industrial facilities, causing fires in multiple oil and gas sites with up to 286 explosive drones.
Several fires were ignited across the country as both sides vied for leverage amid ceasefire negotiations and President Trump’s trip to China. Speculation arose that Russian leader Vladimir Putin may be facing internal pressure to halt the conflict.
Kremlin officials have shown a more receptive attitude towards a ceasefire deal, as Putin faces mounting pressure due to significant casualties among Russian troops. Russian spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressed openness to further US mediation efforts and indicated Putin’s willingness to meet Zelensky in person once peace negotiations were finalized.
Peskov emphasized the need for extensive preparatory work before reaching a resolution, pointing out ongoing trilateral efforts with Ukraine and the United States to de-escalate the five-year-long conflict. The spokesperson suggested that progress was being made towards concluding the peace process as the war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, continues.
Accusations have been made against Russian troops for committing numerous war crimes against Ukrainian civilians, including allegations of rape, torture, abduction, and murder.
