Queen Camilla Backs Parole Denial in Domestic Violence Case

Date:

Queen Camilla expressed her approval of a parole board’s decision to keep a British Airways pilot, who had fatally attacked his wife, incarcerated. During a Buckingham Palace garden party, the Queen engaged in conversation with domestic abuse advocate Hetti Barkworth-Nanton. Barkworth-Nanton, a close friend of the victim, Joanna Simpson, noted that the Queen was motivated to combat domestic violence after meeting Simpson’s mother, Diana Parkes.

Barkworth-Nanton, affiliated with Refuge, revealed discussions with the Queen regarding the parole denial for the pilot, Robert Brown, who murdered Simpson in 2010. The Queen, after reviewing the decision summary, endorsed the board’s ruling. Barkworth-Nanton also shared her efforts to prevent Brown’s automatic release in 2023, recounting a conversation with the Queen on the matter at a palace event in 2022.

At the same garden party, the Queen interacted with John Hunt, a BBC commentator, and his daughter, Amy, survivors of a tragic family attack. Hunt, jokingly mentioning sharing horse racing tips with the Queen, highlighted their conversation on upcoming races at York and Newbury. Additionally, the Queen, supported by the Duchess of Gloucester, engaged with guests, encouraging environmental activism and discussing climate concerns with Nick Henry from Climate Action.

Renowned historian Tom Holland praised the King for his Congressional speech, commending his factual accuracy and humor. The King’s support for gender-based violence activism was evident in his invitation to Hunt, his daughter, and former Prime Minister Baroness May to an event promoting the cause. The King also conversed with representatives from the Royal Countryside Fund, emphasizing the importance of environmental efforts.

The Queen’s engagement with various guests at the garden party showcased her support for causes ranging from domestic abuse prevention to environmental conservation. Her interactions with attendees reflected her commitment to advocacy and community engagement.
