Millions of individuals are currently experiencing power outages following a significant blackout today. The western portion of Cuba has been plunged into darkness due to power disruptions, impacting numerous residents in Havana and other areas as the nation grapples with depleting oil reserves.
The Ministry of Energy and Mines has reported a disconnection in the National Electric System, affecting people from Pinar del Rio in the east to Camaguey in the central region. Cuban energy minister Vicente de la O Levy has stated that efforts are underway to restore the electric grid amidst a challenging energy situation, with work crews actively engaged in the restoration process.
This blackout marks the second instance of power failure in Cuba’s western region in the past three months. The recent outage, described as “unexpected,” is linked to a malfunction at the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Plant located in Matanzas. The cause of the latest power outage on Wednesday remains unclear.
Cuba’s energy supply has been strained by diminishing oil reserves following disruptions in petroleum shipments from Venezuela due to a US intervention in early January. President Donald Trump’s threats of imposing tariffs on oil transactions with Cuba have further complicated the country’s energy situation.
Cuba primarily relies on large thermoelectric plants like Antonio Guiteras, which require crude oil for operation. The nation produces only half of the necessary crude oil, necessitating imports from other countries, a challenging task due to US sanctions. Cuba has traditionally sourced oil from allies like Venezuela and Russia for cost-effective fuel options.
In response to the energy crisis, Cuba’s government has implemented stringent fuel-saving measures and announced restrictions on jet fuel availability at nine airports until mid-March. Even before the recent setbacks, the island was already facing challenges with its aging electric grid, generation shortfalls, and disruptions in fuel supplies.
