A man named Richard Murphy, previously convicted of sexual offenses, has been sentenced to jail for raping a teenage girl who was present at a house party with his son. The High Court judge in Dublin described Murphy as a danger to young girls. The incident occurred when Murphy encountered the girl and his son in the garden of a neighboring house where he was living as part of his bail conditions.
During the trial, it was revealed that Murphy’s son had been socializing with the victim at the party and engaged in consensual sexual activity with her in the garden. Murphy arrived at the scene, instructed his son to go inside, and proceeded to question the girl about her parents while she was partially undressed, preventing her from covering herself.
Subsequently, Murphy committed oral rape and then raped the girl before warning her not to disclose the incident to anyone. The victim confided in her friends, and they left the party. The judge highlighted the victim’s fear during the assault.
Murphy, residing in Rectory Heights, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, was already on bail for previous sexual offenses involving young girls, for which he has been convicted and is serving a sentence. He was found guilty of rape and oral rape in October 2022 after a trial at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Waterford in June. The court sentenced him to 11 years and six months in prison, to be served consecutively to his ongoing sentence.
The judge emphasized the severity of Murphy’s actions, noting an escalation in his predatory behavior. The court acknowledged the victim’s bravery in waiving her anonymity, allowing Murphy to be publicly named in the case. Despite minimal mitigating factors and Murphy’s refusal to accept the jury’s verdicts, the court imposed a consecutive sentence due to the offenses being committed while he was on bail. The judge extended legal aid for a potential appeal and commended the victim for her courage in addressing the court.
