Misty McDaniel, a 42-year-old woman from Knox County, Tennessee, has been arrested for allegedly severely neglecting her elderly father, leading to serious physical harm. Court documents reveal that her father, who had been bedridden for ten years following a stroke, suffered from severe pressure ulcers and untreated bed sores that were so extensive that his spine was visible through his skin.
Authorities intervened after McDaniel’s father was rushed to the hospital with dangerously high blood sugar levels that could have resulted in a diabetic coma. Medical evaluations on January 2 showed his blood sugar levels exceeding 600, posing a significant risk of a life-threatening condition known as Diabetic hyperosmolar syndrome.
Reportedly, over a six-month period of neglect, nurses discovered pressure ulcers and bed sores on various parts of the elderly man’s body during his hospitalization. He underwent critical care treatment, including surgeries to remove necrotic tissue from his wounds, due to the severity of his condition.
Allegedly, both Misty McDaniel and her husband, who were responsible for the care of her father, failed to seek medical attention for him despite his deteriorating health. Upon hospital admission, it was found that the father had not been receiving his diabetes medication, leading to severe exposure of muscles and bones, including three vertebrae.
Following her arrest on January 17, authorities charged McDaniel with aggravated neglect of an elderly or vulnerable adult resulting in serious bodily injury. During the investigation at their shared residence, authorities reportedly found a stockpile of blood sugar medication that had not been administered to the father.
