In the span of a single day, an additional 37 deaths linked to the Ebola virus were reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, marking one of the highest daily death tolls since the onset of the outbreak. The country’s Ministry of Health revealed that the death toll has now reached at least 930 as the deadly virus continues to spread, causing concerns about safety hindering aid operations in heavily affected regions.
Out of the 2,344 confirmed cases as of Saturday, the 37 deaths were recorded within the 24-hour period from Friday to Saturday. This outbreak, which began on May 15, is currently the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record, attributed in part to the rare Bundibugyo virus responsible for the outbreak, which lacks an approved vaccine or treatment, making containment efforts challenging.
The highly contagious nature of the virus allows it to be transmitted from wild animals to humans and among humans through direct contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated materials. The Democratic Republic of Congo’s Health Ministry reported that 724 patients are under isolation and care in hospitals, with intensified response measures being implemented in affected health zones. The ministry also noted 22 new recoveries within a 24-hour period.
While Ebola is a rare but severe and often fatal disease, recent spikes in deaths have been observed in the worst-affected province of Ituri, where safety concerns have impeded response efforts. Attacks on health facilities and teams, fueled by skepticism and misinformation, have posed additional challenges, with five out of the country’s 26 provinces impacted, mainly in the eastern region plagued by rebel conflict.
Since the outbreak declaration in mid-May, numerous attacks targeting health facilities and teams have been recorded, with some health workers protesting unpaid wages and a significant number of infections among healthcare personnel resulting in fatalities. Resistance to Ebola response efforts has also been witnessed in the form of assaults on healthcare workers and facilities, further complicating containment strategies.
The situation has prompted humanitarian partners to relocate staff to safer areas, such as Bunia, due to escalating violence hampering access to treatment centers and affected communities. Concerns raised by the World Health Organization about the emergence of new Ebola cases from unknown sources indicate a rapid spread of the outbreak beyond current tracking capabilities despite ongoing response initiatives.
