This statement follows ongoing discussions between Copenhagen and Washington aimed at finding a mutually agreeable resolution regarding Greenland’s status. President Trump has persistently advocated for the U.S. to claim sovereignty over the island, citing national security interests.
In an interview with the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza, Prime Minister Frederiksen disclosed the establishment of a high-level working group to engage in further talks with the U.S. However, she made it clear that Denmark has no intention of compromising its territorial integrity.
While emphasizing a desire to avoid conflict with the United States, Frederiksen stressed that Denmark would respond decisively to any threats. In response to U.S. assertions about Greenland, European allies have expressed solidarity with Denmark, affirming their support and readiness to act in a similar manner if necessary. Frederiksen underscored the autonomy of Greenland’s population, emphasizing that their allegiance cannot be swayed by external influences.
The Prime Minister highlighted increased NATO activity in the Arctic region in response to Trump’s remarks regarding Greenland. She expressed hope that a stronger allied presence in and around Greenland would help settle the dispute and prevent any further escalation.
These developments coincide with a social media post by President Trump, in which he shared a meme depicting himself overlooking Greenland, likening his stance on the territory to that of a towering figure. Despite Trump’s repeated assertions of Greenland’s strategic importance to the U.S., Denmark and the Greenlandic populace remain steadfast in their position on sovereignty.
