“Confrontation in Golders Green: Met Officer Referred Over Al Jazeera Clash”

Date:

An incident involving residents of Golders Green and Al Jazeera journalists covering an arson attack against the Jewish Community Ambulance service Hatzola has led to the referral of an off-duty volunteer Met Police officer to the force’s standards team.

The confrontation occurred in the London suburb known for its significant Jewish population, where residents were captured on video encircling reporters from the Qatar-based media outlet. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the participation of an off-duty volunteer police officer in the altercation.

Footage circulating online captured a man instructing the journalists to leave, with others shouting “go home.” Reports also mentioned insults like “terrorist sympathisers” and accusations of spreading “terrorist propaganda” directed at the journalists near Highfield Road, where the arson attack on Hatzola ambulances had taken place.

In response to the incident, the Met stated that the matter involving the off-duty special constable had been referred to the Directorate of Professional Standards for evaluation. They assured a review of the footage to determine if any offenses were committed during the altercation.

The presence of a large police and media contingent was noted near the scene following the attack, with an estimated 50 individuals surrounding the Al Jazeera journalists during the confrontation.

Emphasizing the importance of press freedom, the Met acknowledged the challenging situation faced by journalists and vowed to remain vigilant for any similar altercations in the future. The police reaffirmed their commitment to investigating the incident further based on the footage.

Regarding the arson attack on Hatzola, authorities are treating it as an antisemitic hate crime, with CCTV footage showing individuals setting fire to the ambulances before fleeing. Two British suspects were apprehended and subsequently released on bail pending ongoing investigations.

Al Jazeera, a Doha-based independent news organization partially funded by the Qatari government, has been approached by the Mirror for comment on the incident.
