An abandoned theme park in Cleethorpes, closed since 2016, may be revitalized into a new holiday park concept known as “Center Parcs-by-the-sea”. Pleasure Island, once a popular attraction with a variety of rides and shows, is now a derelict site with decaying structures hinting at its former glory.
Plans have been proposed to transform the former Pleasure Island location into a £70 million development that includes a Lidl superstore, hotels, and a holiday park. These plans, submitted in January 2023, are expected to create around 400 jobs in the local area, with an additional 400 jobs during the construction phase. Environmental assessments and other studies have been conducted to evaluate the impact of the redevelopment.
The proposed project includes a mix of amenities such as lodges, hotels, restaurants, retail units, and a garden center. The site will feature two hotels, a drive-thru coffee shop, retail spaces, and a cycle hire center. Moreover, a lake at the center of the site will be complemented by an anglers’ hub for fishing enthusiasts.
Despite objections from some retailers and residents regarding traffic and wildlife concerns, many support the development for its potential job creation and tourism benefits. The planning application, considered to enhance the tourism and visitor economy, aims to revitalize the once-vacant and deteriorating site, offering a new attraction for the area.
Developers behind the project, including Lidl GB Ltd and other partners, are optimistic about the proposal’s approval, emphasizing the positive impact on the local economy and job market. The plans are set to undergo review by the council, with hopes of breathing new life into the disused theme park site and contributing to the overall vitality of the resort area.
