“Hull to Revive Outdoor Swimming Pool After Four Decades”

Date:

A city in the UK, long a target of ridicule, is set to revive its large outdoor swimming pool that was torn down nearly four decades ago.

Hull, a city that has endured scorn over the years, partly due to its past reputation as one of the ‘worst places to live in the UK’ and the decline of its fishing and shipping industries, is now challenging these perceptions despite the progress it has made.

Today, officially known as Kingston upon Hull, the city boasts vibrant independent establishments like bars and restaurants, cultural venues, and notable attractions such as Stage@TheDock amphitheater and The Deep aquarium housing over 3,500 marine creatures. It also features the historic Old Town with its medieval architecture, cobbled streets, and museums.

Recognized as one of the ‘top travel destinations in the world for 2026’ by National Geographic, Hull is on a positive trajectory with plans to reintroduce its once-popular lido.

The city’s former lido at East Park, which provided a refreshing retreat for locals until its closure in 1985 and subsequent demolition in 1988, is now being reconsidered for restoration by the local council.

In response to recent tragedies during hot weather, with several fatalities in open water, the initiative to bring back the lido is gaining traction. The proposal, advocated by Councillor Jessica Smith during Drowning Prevention Week, has garnered support from Councillor Kalvin Neal, although there are discussions on the potential relocation of the facility.

The restoration of the lido would be a valuable addition to Hull, complementing the city’s existing Albert Avenue Pools and Fitness, the only council-operated lido in Hull, offering a popular outdoor heated swimming pool opened in 2023 after extensive refurbishment.

Emphasizing the importance of swimming safety, Councillor Jessica highlighted the need for safe swimming facilities and education, particularly in a city surrounded by water bodies and lakes, echoing concerns shared by Councillor George Grozav.
