Broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby has criticized the House of Lords for their actions regarding the Assisted Dying bill, calling it “inhumane.” He is now calling on the public to support a petition that urges the government to prevent the unelected Lords from blocking the bill.
Dimbleby highlighted that over 1,000 amendments have been proposed for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, with most coming from a small group of Lords. The petition has garnered nearly 90,000 signatures and needs 100,000 for parliamentary debate consideration.
A close associate of King Charles criticized the current UK laws as “anachronistically cruel” compared to capital punishment. Dimbleby shared the story of his brother Nicholas, who passed away from motor neurone disease at 77, emphasizing the need for assisted dying options.
He expressed concern over delays in the House of Lords’ review process and urged the public to support the petition to ensure the bill’s progress. Dimbleby emphasized the importance of respecting individuals’ right to choose their end-of-life options and criticized attempts to deny this right as undemocratic and inhumane. He called out certain Lords for obstructing the bill’s advancement through filibustering tactics.
