“Disturbing Footage Exposes Harsh Reality of UK Lab Testing”

Date:

Horrifying moments of animals in extreme distress have been captured on video, shedding light on the harsh reality of laboratory testing in the UK, according to activists.

The unprecedented footage, recorded by a staff member at two testing facilities, depicts various animals such as beagles, primates, mini-pigs, rats, and rabbits enduring significant suffering and anguish. One disturbing scene shows long-tailed macaques being fed new anti-obesity medication to determine its suitability for human use.

The video also reveals beagles with masks strapped to their faces, being compelled to inhale test substances, and rabbits being confined in cylindrical tubes for intravenous testing. Additionally, there are distressing images of monkeys in restraints, some struggling and others vocalizing distress before having a tube inserted down their throat.

Mini-pigs are shown squealing in terror as a liquid is tested on fresh wounds on their backs, while rats are immobilized inside plastic tubes and forced to inhale test substances. The footage contains graphic content that is too distressing to be made public.

Animal Aid and Animals International collaborated following concerns raised by a former employee who gathered the evidence, describing it as the most extensive to date. The individual expressed being haunted by the sounds of animals during the experiments, which could last up to two years.

The employee shared, “I, along with many colleagues, took on this job out of care for animals, only to realize that our roles involved facilitating their suffering.” The distress endured during the testing deeply affected the employee, leading to a belief that the public should be aware of the activities within UK labs. The employee emphasized the emotional toll of carrying out such procedures when caring for the well-being of animals.

Activists have swiftly called on the government to expedite its commitment to phasing out animal testing, condemning the footage as shocking and horrific. They argue that the footage unveils the reality and extent of regulatory toxicity testing in the UK before products are approved for sale in mainstream pharmacies.

Iain Green, Director of Animal Aid, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “The suffering depicted in this footage is horrifying, showcasing the pain and distress of these animals. This systematic torture, masked as science, is conducted on an industrial scale with government approval. I urge MPs and Ministers to view this footage, take action to end animal suffering in laboratories, and embrace science that is relevant to humans.”

The testing facilities in the UK, where the lab worker was employed, conduct required safety tests for major pharmaceutical companies before progressing to human clinical trials. These sites are regulated by the Home Office and operate within legal boundaries.

The former lab worker released the footage and details to spark a public dialogue on animal testing. This revelation, the most comprehensive in over a decade, comes shortly after the UK government announced plans to hasten the adoption of non-animal testing methods to reduce and replace animal experiments.

Lyn White, Director of Animals International, highlighted the need for public awareness, stating, “These tests, conducted under the guise of public safety, have been shielded from scrutiny. If this reality had been exposed earlier, public outcry would likely have demanded its cessation. In today’s world, any system that disregards animal sentience and perpetuates their suffering cannot be justified and must cease.”

Chris Magee from Understanding Animal Research countered the claims, stating that extreme suffering in such tests is rare, with the footage likely showcasing the most severe experiments permitted by law. He emphasized that using animals for research is restricted when non-animal alternatives are available.

Despite a 43% reduction in animals used for regulatory testing over the past decade, completely phasing out animal testing remains a distant goal due to the current limitations of alternatives like cell cultures or ‘organs-on-chips’ in replicating full organism complexity.

Magee stressed the importance of life-saving drugs like cancer treatments and statins, derived from animal testing, and the necessity of post-mortem examinations for disease research.

While Labour has pledged to phase out animal testing in its manifesto, Science Minister Lord Vallance acknowledged the challenges in discontinuing all animal testing immediately.

Irene Campbell, Labour MP and chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Phasing Out Animal Experiments in Medical Research, emphasized the need for swift action to replace animal experiments with innovative human-specific methods for patient progress.

The government assured that animal testing in the UK is strictly regulated and only conducted when necessary, with efforts underway to phase out animal testing through safe and proven alternatives.
